Rudy Rotter - We Are Family

Rudy Rotter: We are Family
October 17 through January 9

Opening reception and catalog release: Saturday, December 6 – 6 to 9 p.m.

Co-curators Debra Brehmer and Michael Davidson will present a walk-through discussion of the show at 7 p.m. The opening is free and the public is welcome.

Rudy Rotter was a Manitowoc dentist who began making art at age 43. Once he started, he never stopped, producing about 15,000 objects by the time of his death in 2001. Portrait Society Gallery is proud to present a selection of his wood carvings and works on paper. This is the first gallery show of Rudy’s work since his death. The John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan owns a collection of his work.

Much of Rotter’s art dealt thematically with humanity and the family. In his wood carvings, figural groupings are stacked or entwined in endlessly inventive ways. The works on paper and mixed-media works contain related subjects, showing the inter-connectedness of mankind. Rotter’s tenacious belief in human intimacy offers a hopeful and heartfelt message of what’s really important in the world.
